Superior Roboworks has competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition since 2002. The team is run by college students who participate in the FIRST Robotics Enterprise at Michigan Technological University, in Houghton, MI. These college mentors believe in the goals of FIRST and strive to inspire the high school team members to appreciate and explore engineering, math, science and technology.

This team was imported to Michigan Tech in 2000, as team #221, by four college freshmen. In 2001, support for FIRST came from several different departments at Michigan Tech, who continue to donate money and resources to the team. That same year, a more defined partnership between Michigan Tech, the Copper Country Intermediate School District (CCISD) and the team was also formed - the CCISD, representing all high schools from the area, allows all eligible students from these high schools to participate on the robotics team.
Since the team had grown and changed so much during its time at Michigan Tech, in 2002 an executive decision was made by the team to change the team name and register for a new team number. Since then, we have competed as Team #857, Superior Roboworks. In 2005, the team adopted a Yeti as an official mascot and is also known by this namesake throughout the FIRST Robotics Competition.
